Christmas is fast approaching, so it’s time to think about what decorations and arts and crafts you can put together with your family. While Christmas is undoubtedly a fun time of year, it’s often the time of year that parents or caregivers of neuro-diverse children start to panic.

Our neuro-diverse children often find it challenging to tell us what they would like to make or how much they want to be involved. Add all the changes and disruptions to the regular household routine, and the Christmas period can be a difficult time for the whole family.

We thought we’d put together a list of our top decoration and arts and craft ideas for you to do with your ASD child this festive season to help reduce the stress and increase the enjoyment for everyone.

Advent Calendar

The first thing you need to buy in the lead-up to Christmas is an advent calendar. This will help countdown to the big day – and put s big smile on your child’s face. Our Fidget Toy Calendar is designed explicitly for ASD and neuro-diverse children and is the ultimate way to count down to Christmas Day. This fun advent calendar contains 25 fidget items perfect for keeping little hands busy.

Bring the North Pole to your house

There’s nothing more Christmassy than snow! This fun Let it Snow pack makes 5 litres of fluffy ‘snow’ for you to use as decorations in your home.

Christmas Crafts

Sensory fidget toys

Creating homemade Christmas decorations is not only fun but can be educational too. Using glitter, pom poms, paper cutouts, and glue sticks to make sparkly festive favours develops fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, visual perception, planning, and a few children involved in the process, social skills too.

Make a Key for Father Christmas

Many modern Australian homes don’t have chimneys, and at some point, your child is likely to ask how Santa will be able to get in. Making a Magic Key will let Santa show up whenever he wants! Help them cut out a key from a piece of card and encourage them to colourpaint or decorate it how they like.

Manage their anxiety

While Christmas is exciting, it can also be overwhelming. Try to balance the activates with plenty of downtime to keep anxiety at a manageable level. Creating a calming environment can help by giving your child the ability to reset and refresh.
