Sensory toys with purpose

Many neurodiverse children, particularly those on the autism spectrum, can find social interactions challenging. Here are some gifts ideas for children with autism to make their interactions more comfortable.

  • Learning about the environment: cause and effect toys help teach children control over their environment. This category can include interactive toys that respond to voices or touch with light and sound or vibrations, as well as toys that can push, pull, or spin.
  • Learning emotions: books and toys that discuss feelings and emotions can help children understand social cues.
  • Sharing: kids can learn to share and wait their turn with card games, board games, stepping stones or by taking turns with musical instruments or blocks.
  • Social interaction: role-playing with dolls, stuffed animals, puppets, action figures, or robots can help neurodiverse children learn appropriate social interactions.
  • Fine motor skills: some neurodiverse kids excel at intricate handiwork and understanding how things fit together, while others can find buttoning clothing a daily struggle. Gifts like lacing beads and shapes, magnetic tiles, blocks, puzzles, and string art can help develop fine motor skills.
  • Calming anxiety: kids with sensory issues can find a scratchy tag or seams in a sock stressful. Weighted items can help calm anxiety and reduce overstimulation. Headphones or earmuffs can reduce sensory overwhelm, as can a white noise machine or night lights that project a gentle, familiar pattern.

Let us know if you find a gift that works well for the neurodiverse child in your world. We recommend buying a backup in case they are lost, outgrown, or loved too much.
